SILVER STREET ATTIC

The Silver Street Attic project transformed an unfinished attic with a former bedroom into a hangout space for family movie nights, guests, and sleepovers for the family’s two sons. The project involved demolishing the existing room that formerly incorporated the south facing dormer so that the main space would have light from the east, south and west facing dormers. The north side, including the vent pipes from the bathrooms below, were integrated into a new storage area. This meant that the exterior envelope did not need to change except for new windows which replaced existing single pane windows. The sloped planes of the hipped roof were insulated with rigid insulation reclaimed from landfill and hemp batt insulation for low embodied carbon. The spaces within the dormers were finished with sheetrock and painted white to bring in the light and provide accents for the space. Built-in shelving occupies the space under the eaves. Carpet tiles over the existing refinished subfloor provides soft footing and ease of replacement in the event of spills.
