13 SILVER STREET ATTIC
The Silver Street Attic project transformed an unfinished attic andpossibly a former bedroom into a hangout space for family movie nights, guests, and sleepovers for the family’s two sons. The project involveddemolishing the existing room that formerly incorporated the south facingdormer so that the main space would have light from the East, South andWest facing dormers. The North side, including the vent pipes from thebathrooms below, were integrated into a new storage area. This meantthat the exterior envelope did not need to change except for new windowswhich replaced existing single pane windows. The sloped planes of thehipped roof were insulated with rigid insulation reclaimed from landfilland hemp batt insulation for low embodied carbon. The spaces withinthe dormers were finished with sheetrock and painted white to bring inthe light and provide accents to the space. Built-in shelving occupies thespace under the eaves. Carpet tiles over the existing refinished subfloorprovide soft footing and ease of replacement in the event of spills.
